WHITE FILLING

When a tooth needs to be filled there is no ideal filling material that adequately replaces the original tooth substance. The most common filling material successfully used over the 100 years is a dental amalgam. Some patients and dentist have concerns with amalgam because of it’s mercury content although the general scientific consensus may prevaricate its safe use. These grey metallic filling could be used for back teeth. Tooth colored filling materials are essentially plastic strengthened with ceramics. They offer an alternative to amalgam in many situations.
Most of the modern-day tooth-coloured composite fillings match the colour and hardness of the teeth, hence more durable and cosmetic, while indicated for the use of small fillings in posterior teeth as they requires less tooth substance removal for their placement. As they require more moisture control they may take more time when placing them. Tooth-colored fillings are likely to cost more than the equivalent amalgam filling.
As tooth-coloured fillings are plastic and are likely to wear more quickly, they are not strong enough when placing large fillings. In general, they might need to be replaced, polished or resurfaced more frequently. Some patients may experience more sensitivity after composite fillings, in particular following the first week of the restoration.
If the tooth hypersensitivity or tenderness does not settle down after being filled with any filling material, a root treatment may be necessary, or at times a full tooth coverage by means of a crown (cap) may be required when a more permanent solution is required.
